Day 1: Exploring Sea Caves and Wildlife at St Ninian’s

We kicked off our trip paddling from Spiggie Beach over toward Colsay and up to St Ninian’s Bay. The water was remarkably flat and pristine, making for perfect paddling conditions as we explored small coastal caves along the way.
The highlight of the day had to be the local wildlife. Looking up at the cliffs, we were greeted by cormorants and their chicks perching high above, staring down at us with an intense, theatrical gaze—it honestly felt like a scene straight out of The Lion King with Scar and the hyenas eyeing us from the shadows!
Day 2: Choppy Waters & Coastal Exploration at Muckle Roe

On day two, nature reminded us of Shetland’s wild side. With a north wind whipping up, we headed to Muckle Roe for a much choppier day on the water. Despite the rougher conditions, it made for a super fun, invigorating paddle. Navigating the coastline and exploring the rugged geological formations against the wind was an absolute blast.
Dinner tonight took us up to Brae to enjoy the UK’s most northerly chip shop! Scallop supper! What a treat!
Day 3: Parkruns, Castles, and Island Treats

After two active days on the water, day three was all about exploring Shetland's land side:
Morning Run: We started bright and early crossing over to Bressay to tackle the local Bressay parkrun—a fantastic way to take in the views and meet local runners.
Town & Castle Exploration: Afterward, we spent time wandering through the charming shops in Lerwick, before taking a short trip over to Scalloway to check out the historic Scalloway Castle.
Sweet Finish: No day of exploring is complete without a treat, so we finished up with delicious ice creams at The Island Larder back in Lerwick.
A night on the town was up next, and the local people are super fun on a night out. The Douglas Arms, known as The Marlix, was bouncing and a cracking pub for a few pints to finish the day.

Day 4: Glassy Paddles & Fresh Scallops at Sandsound
We saved one of the absolute best experiences for last. We launched from Sandsound on a day that couldn't have been more different from day two—calm, peaceful, and stunningly beautiful paddling conditions. Seals were everywhere, and puffins swam around us; it was lush.
After a serene journey along the coast, our boat picked us up to take us back to the start. The grand finale? We were treated to fresh, hand-dived scallops right off the beach. Tasting fresh Shetland seafood right at the water’s edge was the ultimate capstone to an incredible journey.

Shetland truly delivers on every level—whether you’re after sea cave adventures, wild weather, local history, or world-class food. We left with tired arms, full bellies, and memories that will last a lifetime.
