Join Us for Zero to Hero Paddling Across Loch, Sea, and River Over Three Weeks

Paddling is one of the best ways to connect with nature, get some exercise, and have fun. If you’ve ever thought about trying paddleboarding but didn’t know where to start, I’ve got something exciting for you. Join us for one session a week over three weeks across three very different environments: the sea, a loch, and a river. This journey takes you from zero experience to confident paddler, all while exploring some of Scotland’s most beautiful waters.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or someone who wants to improve your skills, this adventure is designed to help you grow step by step. Let me walk you through what this paddling experience looks like, why it’s so rewarding, and how you can join in.

Why Paddle Across Loch, Sea and River?

Each water environment offers a unique challenge and experience. Paddling on the sea, for example, means dealing with waves, tides, and wind. It’s a great way to build strength and balance. Lochs, on the other hand, are usually calmer and surrounded by stunning landscapes, perfect for practising technique and enjoying peaceful moments. Rivers add another layer of excitement with flowing water and sometimes gentle rapids, which help improve your control and reaction skills.

By paddling across all three, you get a full range of experiences that build your confidence and ability. It’s like training in different gyms to become a well-rounded athlete. Plus, you get to see Scotland from a fresh perspective, gliding over water that reflects mountains, forests, and skies.

Week 1: Starting on the Loch

The first week is all about getting comfortable on the water. We start on the loch because it’s a great place to learn balance and basic paddling strokes. Lochs are generally easier to learn in as we don't have to deal with tide and swell.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Get on and off your board safely

  • Keep your balance even when the water moves

  • Use your paddle efficiently to move forward and turn

  • Understand basic sea safety and tides

During this week, we use boards from the Glasgow Paddleboarders Co. SUP Package. These boards are stable, easy-to-handle and include lightweight paddles designed for beginners. Perfect for building confidence without feeling overwhelmed.

By the end of the first week, you’ll feel more at ease on the water and ready to take on new challenges.

Week 2: Exploring the Sea

Once you’ve got the basics down, it’s time to move to the sea. The sea can be a playground, often surrounded by hills and forests and full of wildlife. The water is more changeable than the lochs, which makes it a great place to learn about wind and tides.

In the sea environment, you’ll focus on:

  • Paddling smoothly and efficiently over longer distances

  • Learning how to read the water for hidden currents or obstacles

  • Practising turns and stops with more control

  • Enjoying the peaceful surroundings and wildlife

Spending time on the sea helps you build endurance and confidence. You’ll start to feel like a real paddler, ready to take on the river next.

Week 3: Taking on the River

The final week is the most exciting. Paddling on a river means dealing with flowing water, which requires quick thinking and good control. It’s a great way to test everything you’ve learned so far.

Here’s what you’ll work on:

  • Navigating gentle rapids and currents safely

  • Using your paddle to steer and brake effectively

  • Reading the river to find the best path

  • Building strength and agility

For river paddling, we generally use all round boards. These board packages are designed for maneuverability and durability, perfect for the changing conditions of a river.

By the end of this week, you’ll have gone from zero to hero, able to paddle confidently across loch, sea, and river.
