After a flurry of activity and messages to get ready for the festive weekend away, it was fitting that we were accompanied by a flurry of snow as we all headed north towards Roam West, our highland home for the weekend, based a few miles outside of Fort William in Onich.
After a snowy drive on Friday, it was time to meet the group and plan the potential trips for the next day. A storm was currently battering the south, and although we had escaped the worst of the gales, we still needed to consider a sheltered option for Saturday’s paddle, with a few of the group doing a river trip on the Lochy, and the rest of us waiting to see what what Saturday brought.
We woke to the beautiful mountains covered in snow, and after a team breakfast (community bacon, anyone?) we headed off to paddle the Caledonian Canal, a scenic waterway at the foot of Ben Nevis, heralding the start of the Great Glen Way. Boards inflated, much discussion on how many layers were needed (there was snow on the hills after all), and lunch packed, we were on our way! Heading off from Gairlochy, we had the wind at our backs whilst we paddled, chatted and picnic-ed our way to Banavie. A beautiful, 10km paddle to help whet our appetites for the Festive Feast awaiting us back at Roam West that evening.
After some post-paddle relaxation, it was then time to meet for a delicious Christmas dinner in the restaurant at Roam West. The fire was blazing, and there was plenty of Christmas cheer (and Christmas jumpers!) as we enjoyed a delicious meal! This was then followed by our very own Al Gal’s superb Festive Quiz! What’s the name of your favourite gritter?
Sunday morning brought some clear blue skies, and the chance to paddle the nearby Loch Leven, setting off from the pier at Ballachulish. Amid the stunning Glencoe mountains, we set out and battled against some strong headwinds. We mainly stayed within the bay due to the winds, but a few managed to get out to the atmospheric Eilean Munde, a small island full of local history. After a short downwinder back to base, it was time to start saying goodbye to fantastic weekend!
Until next time, Roam West! We’ll be back :)
